Masson Memorial Award

Established as a memorial to the late Sir David Orme Masson, Founder of the RACI, this prestigious scholarship is open to RACI members who are eligible to proceed for a year's study of Chemistry at BSc Honours level.

About this award

The Medal shall be awarded annually to a full member (MRACI and above) of the RACI who, in the opinion of the Board of the RACI has contributed significantly towards the development of, or innovation through, applied research, or in industrial fields. This contribution shall be judged on evidence submitted to the adjudicating panel. This award requires nomination by a senior RACI member.

The nominated candidate is required to be a current member for a minimum of 3 years.

The award is judged on the candidate’s work covering the last 10 years or equivalent relative to opportunity. The work to be considered for the award should include a substantial contribution made within Australia.
The nomination document requirement is a current CV, a summary/synopsis of research outcomes and impact and up to four referee email and telephone contacts.

If in the opinion of the Board there is no candidate who has sufficient merit, the Board may refrain from making an award. The decision of the Board is final and no discussions or correspondence will be entered into.

Theo Ellington

 At the time of being awarded the Masson Memorial Award for 2023, I was an Honours student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry at the University of Tasmania. My research into my PhD will continue to centre around organic radical polymers for portable energy storage, aiming to address the growing demand for sustainable alternatives to lithium-ion batteries. By developing metal-free, adaptable materials that are easily recyclable, our work contributes to reducing environmental impact and reliance on traditional battery technologies.
