Graham Johnston Best Thesis Award
Formerly known as the Bionomics Best Thesis Award
The Graham Johnston Best Thesis Award is to recognise and encourage outstanding young research scientists at the beginning of their careers. The award is given for the best PhD thesis conferred in the previous two years in the field of Medicinal Chemistry and/or Chemical Biology.
To be eligible for the award, the nominee must be a financial RACI member and must have had their PhD degree approved by the governing body of an Australian University within the previous two years dating from the close of nominations.
Formerly known as the Bionomics Best Thesis Award, this award has been renamed in recognition of Professor Graham Johnstons’ seminal contributions to the MCCB Division, pharmacology, and medicinal chemistry in Australia.
The award winner will be invited to present a lecture at the next RACI Medicinal Chemistry & Chemical Biology Division Conference to showcase their research to the medicinal chemistry and chemical biology community in Australia. The conference registration costs of the award winner will be covered.
The award winner will be selected by a panel of at least 4 judges (with gender balance), who are members of the RACI Medicinal Chemistry & Chemical Biology Division. The award may be shared if the judges agree that more than one nominee is equally worthy of the award. No person may be nominated more than once.
Nominations for the award can be made by any member of the RACI, however self-nominations are not eligible.
Nominations must include the following information:
- names of (i) award nominee and (ii) nominator;
- electronic copy of the thesis;
- electronic copies of papers published by the nominee;
- electronic copies of examiners reports;
- curriculum vitae of nominee; and
- Two supporting letters are required, one from the PhD principal supervisor and one from an additional faculty member who is familiar with the nominee’s thesis work. These letters should comment on the accomplishments of the nominee, the thesis quality, and the significance of the thesis work.
Nominations are to be submitted online (link on this page).
Members will be advised when nominations open for submission.
Following the deadline, no additional applications or nominations for the award will be considered.
If the selection committee determines that no candidate demonstrates adequate merit, they reserve the right to abstain from granting the award.
