Materials Chemistry

Our Purpose

We created the Materials Chemistry Division to:

• Provide a networking platform for those with a common interest from a variety of sectors.
• Disseminate the latest research in, and applications of, Materials Chemistry.
• Serve as a window to link materials chemistry with other fields of Science and Technology as well as Industry
• Provide for the professional development of Materials Chemists
• Encourage students to embark on a career in one of the many sub-disciplines of Materials Chemistry.

The Materials Chemistry Division supports activities covering the synthesis, structure, properties and functional applications of materials to advance fundamental chemistry and technological progress.

It is inherently interdisciplinary, encompassing, but not limited to:

• Electronic and magnetic materials
• Multifunctional materials
• Engineering materials
• Energy materials
• Environmental and sustainable materials
• Bio and medical materials
• Informatic materials
• Nanomaterials
   

The name was changed from the original Solid-state Chemistry Division in 2006 to reflect its increasingly interdisciplinary nature and its relationship to other Divisions in chemistry and related fields in physics and engineering.

Regular Events

Our Materials Chemistry Division is very active in holding regular events. Highlights include:

• A biennial conference called “Materials Chemistry and Applications” where the latest academic research and innovations in the commercial sector are presented.
• A biennial "Youth Symposium on Materials Chemistry" where postgraduate students and early career chemists showcase their work, gain experience from scientific presentations and network with their peers.
• An annual webinar comprising a flash student presentation competition.

EOIs for the 2nd Australian Materials Chemistry Conference (AMCC25)

Following our successful 1^st Australian Materials Chemistry Conference (AMCC23), many members of the RACI Materials Chemistry Division (MCD) are looking forward to the 2^nd AMCC25. The Executive Committee (EC) of the RACI MCD is therefore seeking expressions of interest (EOI) from prospective conference hosts for the 2^nd Australian Materials Chemistry Conference (AMCC25), which will take place tentatively at the end of 2025, outside of Western Australia.

EOIs are due to the RACI Materials Chemistry Division Executive Committee by July 22, 2024. EOIs will be reviewed by the EC, who will then gauge feasibility through a meeting on July 24, 2024 and proposers for the AMCC25 will be informed of decisions regarding conference hosting shortly after this meeting.

The AMCC23 conference draws ~200 attendees from both academic and industry to present and discuss work at the cutting edge of materials chemistry. Considering the high demand and fast growing of this community, the Executive Committee is expecting to expand the AMCC23 conference program to three days.

The EOI may include the following:

1.      Name, title and organisation of the conference co/chair (host) (Note: can be organised by a group people);

2.      Potential organization/s’ support of the chair/co-chair;

3.      A description of any prior experience the proposers have had with organizing or hosting a conference, and the roles played in this;

4.      Initial thoughts on venue options, and an argument to support the proposed conference location, especially with respect to ease of travel for the conference participants. The EC prefers small towns over city centres to reduce the cost and provide pleasured and relaxed environment for conference participants;

5.      Prospective conference dates (keeping in mind any major local, national, and international holidays, semester schedules, or other aspects that might affect the timing of the conference); Three days are suggested to be considered, as this was the preferred length that emerged from a survey conducted at the end of AMCC23.

The more information provided to points 1 – 5 the easier it will be for the EC to judge the merit of the proposal.

However, any and all information provided will be considered by the Executive Committee. We understand that it is very early in the process and will help prospective candidates with developing a feasible conference plan.
